Although things were really quite interesting a few weeks ago, it has to be said that this month's been despicably quiet.

I've been doing lots of experimenting with microformats in an effort to keep my brain from rotting: and had an extremely pleasant time jamming and chatting with Mr Hawkins. Oh, and looking for places for the trio to play. But other than that... there have been no thrills. But maybe that's what summers should be like; a chance to relax in relative warmth, catch up with people and live a little. I can't really complain as it's been nice: and the madness is sure to start up again in the autumn...

Composing and piano supremo Hawkins talks about travelling - the 50-80% portion of work in music.

Why 50-80%? Well, assuming each gig in jazz and improvised music is just under two hours; for the majority of gigs, each is an hour to get to [as a train user, I'm thinking more of people who drive - it takes me longer]. So I think a musician would travel two hours to play for just under two hours. It takes up a lot of time.

Listen and wonder. Alex Hawkins does a great job on summarising Threadgill's career too.

Another morning... another test post to Facebook. Writing for the trio recording is going well: and preparing for the gig with Alex Hawkins and Dave Kane in Leeds!

25th Jan 12

But on a better note - a busy few days! I've not put it on yet, but I'm playing with old Symbiosis buddies George Grignon and Andy Maclean at Deda on February 11th; that as well as Sunday with Dave Kane and Alexander Hawkins in Leeds; and a gig in with Nat Birchall on Feb 4th at Pizza Express. All good!

This coming Sunday: in Leeds. Very excited about this one - two friends who [I think] have never played together before... but I have a very good feeling about this! Last time I played in @[Alexander Hawkins]' band it was a complete roast: he's a fabulous musician. Here's a video of that time, in Newcastle...

I realise that I've been horribly remiss and not spoken about the great gig I had with @[Dave Kane] and @[Alexander Hawkins]. Alex played an absolute blinder, some really lovely stuff: and the audience [which was very healthy, and warm] really got into his playing! We all had a ball playing - here's a short clip of the proceedings... and there will be more!

Lovely review of the gig with Dave Kane and and Alex Hawkins!

Had a fantastic couple of gigs with Nick Malcolm's quartet: first up in Derby and then down to Bristol where I was depping for Alex Hawkins. Finally got to play with Get The Blessing's Jake McMurchie who I first met at the BBC Jazz Awards! This is a great review of the gig.

For me, one of the interesting things about working with people that write/play very sophisticated music is hearing the linkages and connections that new music has with older 20th Century music. I'm thinking about my experiences with people like Robert Mitchell, Alex Hawkins, Nick Malcolm, et al., who use a language that's thoroughly informed by music of the last two hundred years or so.

Immersing oneself into that sound world - checking out the whole spectrum of jazz, Webern, Ravel, Bartok, Stravinsky, Ligeti, Arnold, Weir, and so on - is as an essential part of knowing how to play these songs as it is to be able to read them [which, in my case, is not all that essential at all since I cannot read music notation].

Was having a chat a few days ago with that clever chap Alex Hawkins and he was describing the subject of correlation against causation - like when people think that Joe Harriott copied Ornette Coleman when in fact he didn\'t; Coleman didn\'t cause Harriott to go in the direction he did - it just so happens that they correlated musically.

In a similar way, some of my work has been compared to the amazing Walt Dickerson, which is overly kind. But I only heard his music four years ago, so I have a lot of catching up to do in terms of listening!

If you\'ve not heard of Walt Dickerson up to now, here WAS a video I found this morning, with Wilbur Ware on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums.

Having spoken to Alex Hawkins the other week, I\'d mentioned that there was a video of the Newcastle gig where I struggled with his beautiful music a couple of years back. Then, talking to the amazing Caroline Pugh yesterday, she brought it up as she was in the audience at the time. So I found it, and here it is! {except - no... blip.tv was shut down!}

Cannot sleep; although I\'ve had a restful day today. On Thursday @[Alexander Hawkins] and I met up to talk about Way In To The Way Out; expect some surprises and good things!

\"a Also, there\'s been a small change in design to the signing in process on the Rambles and Gigs pages: I\'ve grouped all the single-click sign-ons [Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, MSN/Hotmail/Live, Y!/Yahoo, Google and WebID] together, you can simply select the icon or word you want to sign in. AND new comments get an edit button - but it only lasts for thirty minutes. I might make it permanent but we\'ll see.

I\'ve never seen this in full - there are so many greats in this it\'s amazing. I have a lot of this in mind for the little chat Alex Hawkins and I will be having soon...

Following on from @[Alexander Hawkins]' great spot on Jazzon3 last night. There are clips - but this is the full film, and you hear the eloquence of The Master at the beginning.

20th Sep 13

@[Alexander Hawkins] has a new look to his site. It has a fresher look than the previous design - and since Alex is one of the most interesting musicians around, it'll always be worth a visit!
